It was established in 1986 June 6 by blind people from the areas in the Northern Province. It now operates in 9 provinces of the Republic of South Africa.
There is the estimated general membership of about 5000, which is mainly from the rural disadvantaged communities.
FOUNDERS OF THIS ORGANISATION
This Association was established by the late Mr G.M.M. Phasha, the then principal of Bosele School for the blind and deaf, the late Dr Machupe Mphahlele, the then Head of Department of Health for Leboa Government and Adv. Michael Masutha, the present Minister of Justice and Correctional Services in the cabinet of the Republic of South Africa. This was in 1986.
SANABP is an organisation of the blind and partially sighted persons from all backgrounds, representing themselves with the view to strive for the equalisation of opportunities in all spheres of life.
To work towards the empowerment of blind and partially sighted persons by:
- promoting Braille as a medium of communication;
- promoting self-representation in all spheres of life;
- promoting unity within the blind and partially sighted community for the better life;
- striving to instil self-awareness and self-confidence among the blind and partially sighted persons to enable them realise and unfold their skills for a better life;
- restoring human dignity among blind and partially sighted persons and
- striving to change perceptions of the community about blind and partially sighted persons

The Association has the Executive Committee as the governing structure at national, provincial and branch levels. Once in four years the general membership goes to the quadrennial Conference to elect the said structure. It is further made up of branches and provinces. Each of these structures has its co-ordinator.
